Dickens and Drink with Catherine Barker

When: 10.30am start, Saturday 1 October, 2022

Where: Sydney Unitarian Church, 15 Francis St, Darlinghurst (the church is one minute around the corner from where we had our 2018 international conference. It’s about 6 minutes’ walk from Museum Station, 11 minutes’ walk from Town Hall Station).

We're back in October! Do come along to our next meeting on Saturday October 1 at 10.30am at the Sydney Unitarian Church, 15 Francis St, Darlinghurst (about 4 minutes walk from Museum Station).

Our speaker is founding member and past president of the Society, the delightful Catherine Barker.

Catherine has been working n this talk for years, and we are very excited to have it at last. She is a superb speaker and a great Dickens scholar.

Before Catherine, our wonderfully theatrical Vice-President, the Rev. Geoffrey Usher, will be giving a dramatic reading of a section from "The Uncommercial Traveller" called 'A little dinner in an hour'.

The official proceedings begin at 10.30 am, but remember that many people come earlier to have a cup of tea and a chat, so please do consider joining us.

The meeting is open to all, and entry is by donation.

We hope to see you there!

The Fun of Collecting Dickens

What kind of collector are you? ? Are you a completist or are you interested mainly in the highlights of Dickens? Are you motivated by pleasure or profit? Do you want to have fun or to collect with investment in mind? The field open to the would-be collector of Charles Dickens is enormous. There is a wealth of treasure to be found by the adventurous collector – plays, speeches, magazine articles, Association copies, ephemera, sets, Australian editions, illustrated editions, fakes and forgeries, to name but a few directions a collection might take. Louella Kerr discussed all these and more in her talk. Before Louella’s talk, Jane Fulton showcased her collection of Edith Russell Dickens dolls.
